Thought this news about one of my favourite authors was worth mentioning ...

quote:

As of this writing, August 31, 2003, there are only about half a dozen people in the entire known universe who can accurately claim that they have read every novel Heinlein has written.

For those of us who thought there would never again be another new Heinlein novel, the impossible has become reality . "For Us, the Living," is a brand new, never before published novel by Robert A. Heinlein. It is going into print now for the first time and will be in bookstores by the end of November, 2003.

"For Us, the Living" was written by Heinlein about 1938-9, before he wrote his first sf short, "Lifeline." The novel, "For Us, the Living," was deemed unpublishable, mainly for the racy content. So racy is/was the content that in the 1930s the book could not even have been legally shipped through the US mail! For this reason, after a few publisher rejections, the novel was tabled by Heinlein, but the content was mined for his later stories and novels. A fellow named Nehemiah Scudder even appears in "For Us, the Living." It's important to point out that according to those favored few who have thus far read this long lost Heinlein novel, it did not go unpublished because it was bad--they say it's quite good, though clearly a first novel by the author (it has a two and a half page footnote!). It was unpublished because the mores and culture of the time would not allow it.

Well guys, consider a couple of points please:

1) It's the fvcking Rubber Room. All the flaming, crying little pissing matches that go on here, and I'm not allowed to post up a mildly interesting piece of news about one of the most influential authors of the 20th century?

2) Heinlein has millions of fans; surely out of the 13,000 and change registered users at the Rx I am not the only one.

3) The subject of the thread was pretty specific. Why read it if it isn't something you think you'd want to read?

4) Out of more than 1,500 posts here at the Rx, I would say with confidence that fewer than 10% of mine -- possibly even less -- are even remotely related to gambling. I guess my point is, with well over 1,000 utterly unrelated-to-gambling posts in more than a year and a half, what is it about this thread that got not one but two of you to come out of the woodwork for a gratuitous bash?

5) Even a negative reply gets more people to come read a thread, just to see what the activity is. Thanks for the publicity. The best way to drown a thread you don't like is to ignore it, so that it quickly cycles to the back. FYI.

PS. Henny, I would just like to take a moment to congratulate you for your outstanding run in pre-season 2002 MLB. I am certain that your next big hit is just around the corner. Keep up the good work!

Henny

Looking back over the last 10 days, I see four posts of mine in the RR with no replies ... most have a few views ... but um ... you know, I'm not actually posting here for the silly vanity of racking up numbers for the Shrink. If I wanted to generate views and buzz, I'd do the same thing Fox News does and make DRAMATIC ALL CAPS HEADLINES with sensationalistic shit inside that would get a bunch of other posters excited about pissing on each other's views and opinions.

Every now and again a thread of mine gets some discussion going, and it's enjoyable. Why you suddenly decided to start taking a dump in mine is a mystery to me, but if it might give you that extra oomph you need to go on a new winning streak to follow up your previous 2002 MLB pre-season run, I am glad to help out. You go right on and cover me, <scat boy>

Phaedrus.. I tried reading "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress" I think that was Heinlien. I couldn't stand the writing style. Its hard to explain, but the sentences didn't seem properly formed.

Do you have a suggestion on the best Heinlien novel to start with?
